Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail, Delmar, NY — July 22, 2026

Yesterday I went for a walk along the Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail where it passes through Delmar, New York.

There were several other walkers and bike riders on the trail—and at least one reddish-brown stag beetle.

As I passed him, I politely said, “On your left.”

He didn’t seem to care.

Sometimes a Notice Moment doesn’t need to lead to a grand conclusion. I noticed a beetle sharing the trail with the rest of us. I stopped long enough to take his picture. And for a few moments, an ordinary walk became a little more interesting.

That is reason enough to notice.

And the photograph is terrific for it: this rather imposing beetle occupying his little piece of asphalt while the enormous human traffic goes around him.
